The province said the project will extend “the useful life and increase capacity” of the Tracadie sewerage lagoon, according to a press release.

“The facility has limited capacity to accept additional wastewater and has been under pressure from growth in Tracadie and the Saint-Isidore district of Hautes-Terres resulting from increased demand for senior and workforce housing,” the release states.

The infrastructure improvement is required to allow for housing development in the area.

“Access to housing is a challenge across the province and creates unique challenges in rural communities,” Réjean Savoie, minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation, said in the release. “That is why we are supporting the municipality of Tracadie with infrastructure funding for housing development.”

Tracadie Mayor Denis Losier said the infrastructure upgrade in Tracadie will also benefit the nearby community of Hautes-Terres, which uses the municipality’s facility for wastewater treatment.

“The housing crisis currently plaguing our region greatly affects our municipality and represents a major challenge for our rural communities,” he said in the release. “Our aging infrastructure must be renovated and expanded to support the addition of new real estate and commercial and industrial construction for a viable future.”
