Marcellin Lagacé’s plans to add the four units to his building at 13 Alexander St. required a zoning change, and the request was before city council recently.

Marc Bouffard, a planner for the Restigouche Regional Service Commission, said there are actually two parcels of land involved in the expansion with one needing to be rezoned while the zoning for the current building needs to be amended. The land at the rear is currently zoned institutional and needs to be rezoned to residential R3 to allow for multi-units dwellings, and the parcel at the front is zoned properly but needs a slight amendment to allow a maximum of four additional units to be added.

“The addition won’t create any noticeable difference as far as the eye is concerned as it is one storey and they’re simply making it longer, or deeper if you will,” said Bouffard.

“We are recommending the bylaw amendment go ahead as well as the rezoning of the land at the back of the property. The land is more than large enough to accommodate the addition.”

The city is planning a public meeting on May 20, at which time people can voice their opinion on the proposed addition.
